It seems like everybody’s doing it, and why shouldn’t they? If things go well, then everybody will see how important it is to follow this trend. Recently, the HP LaserJet P2055n and HP LaserJet P2055dn were announced by Hewlett-Packard as their new printers. These black-and-white printers are designed to eliminate waste to help the environment as much as it can.
These printers are designed to energy and reduce paper usage. More people everywhere are asking, and even demanding, that products and services be “green”. Many companies are coming out and declaring, at a minimum, an intention to be green, and HP is doing that and more. Because there were delays in removing hazardous parts of their laptops, Greenpeace started protests against them not all that long ago, in July 2009. HP realized that they should be doing things differently, so they did what they could and managed to rank as the greenest Fortune 500 company. Talk about a turn-around!
The HP LaserJet P2055 printers are qualified to use the Energy Star label. They mainly focus on medium sized and smaller businesses, and they aim to maintain a minimum of 35 pages per minute for their printers’ speeds. The difference between the new and old fusing methods is a 50% difference in energy uses, says HP.
Both printers have been designed to quickly and easily print on both sides of one paper, paper that can be 100% recycled without any problems. They have a print speed of up to 35 pages per minute (ppm) and a resolution of 1200dpi x 1200dpi. They also include a 2 by 16 inch LCD display.
The “HP Eco Solutions Print Console” is designed to help administrators reduce energy and paper waste from a standard PC by altering settings. The company also has Carbon Footprint Calculator to help guide users through the best way of printing to help the environment. Despite all the additional tools and technology, these printers are expected to be surprisingly reasonably priced.
Hewlett-Packard announced last year its plans to start using recycled plastic in their HP ink cartridges. Though many ink cartridges are rather small, when combined, it can add up to quite a lot. They planned to replace 10 million pounds of raw material with 10 million pounds of recycled material. Recycled bottles and other goods provide a source for this recycled plastic.
HP has made a commitment to reduce their use of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by 25 percent from their levels in 2005 by the year 2010. HP has said that they are aware that becoming truly green starts with research and finding better, cleaner ways to do business. The technology industry, and all the industries tied to it, have had an enormous impact on the environment. Now that many facts have come to light, it is time for them to step up and take responsibility. It seems as though HP is doing exactly that by starting a bunch of green programs.
The company states it was the first computer manufacturer to run its own recycling operations in 1997. They set a goal for the year 2007, and that was to recycle at least one billion pounds of materials and products, and they succeeded. Now HP provides several options for its customers such as returning, recycling, donating, and trading in used components.
