How they deliver their babies is one of the choices that women can make during their pregnancy. When I say how they will deliver I am referring to a hospital delivery or a homebirth. Most women think that homebirth is not a safe method to give birth that is why they do not realize that they have a choice on how to deliver their babies.But there are of course critics who are wary of this method.But if they just research and look for studies about this method then they will realize that there a lot of evidence that this method is safe.
The safety of a homebirth is definitely questioned. From my observations from my practice as a San Diego midwife I have found it to be absolutely safe. The risks are the same either in a hospital or homebirth as I have witnessed from the 300 homebirths I have assisted in.Having a baby in the hospital or at home doesn’t make any difference in minimizing those risks. But it also doesn’t raise those risks either.
So what would be the possible risks that can happen?One danger that people worry about this method is when complications arise while having a baby.They presume that the people who administer homebirths are not nurses and they are not medically inclined. Well as a homebirth midwife in San Diego we do know medical procedures.We have all the required medical equipment for all the common complications that appear when giving birth.A doctor is obviously needed whenever any serious complications arise from gving birth at home. But that isn’t any different then in a hospital.
Now of course homebirths are only suggested for women who have low risk pregnancies.If it is known that a woman has possible complications while giving birth then the midwife would not recommend this method if she is good. This is standard procedure for all San Diego licensed midwife.This is standard procedure because they are limited in the medical procedures that they can do.That the reason why they make sure that all high risk pregnancies be delivered in a hospital.
For those who do not like this method it will be very hard to convince them to do so. But for those women who see this as an alternative they should understand it is safe.
